Navigating a Career in IT and Public Administration
My professional journey began with a strong computer science and information technology foundation, which I pursued through academic studies and early career roles. I have a bachelor’s in computer information systems and a master’s in public administration. I started as a programmer/analyst, which included application support, providing a broader understanding of technology and unique departmental processes and workflows. A pivotal experience was supervising a team supporting the county’s revenue applications. On this team, we implemented two major ERP systems to offer a better experience for internal and external users, which is where I also honed skills in project management and strategic planning.
Transitioning to IT Manager involved coordinating cross-functional teams and implementing new systems, which sparked my interest in how technology can drive organizational efficiency across multiple departments. I leveraged this experience to address the unique challenges of Judicial and Public Safety processes. The blend of technical expertise and strategic oversight from my previous roles has been instrumental in navigating the complexities of Judicial and Public Safety IT needs.
Cloud Computing, AI and Cybersecurity in Government IT
Several trends are shaping governmental IT administration and DeKalb County’s Department of Innovation and Technology has included them in our strategic plan. One major trend is the increased adoption of cloud computing, which offers scalability, cost-efficiency and flexibility. (This is directly from our IT strategic plan.) DeKalb County aims to implement modern, effective software and retire costly legacy systems, ensuring continuous integration, delivery and shared enterprise services.
Another significant advancement is the rise of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning, which are utilized for data analysis, predictive analytics and improving citizen services. (Directly from our IT strategic plan) DeKalb plans to lead in our responsible use of Artificial Intelligence while combatting the malicious use of this transformational technology against our systems and data while ensuring that our use is rigorously tested to avoid bias and disparate impacts, safeguards privacy and is explainable to the people we serve.
Successfully integrating emerging technologies in government requires a strategic approach that balances innovation with meticulous planning and stakeholder engagement. We can enhance efficiency and service delivery across departments by addressing potential pitfalls and focusing on clear, aligned goals.
Additionally, cybersecurity remains a critical focus, with advancements in threat detection and response mechanisms crucial to protecting sensitive government data. We have zero-trust adoption and IT supply chain security.

Another challenge is managing the increasing complexity of IT systems and integrating new technologies with legacy systems. Ensuring interoperability and minimizing disruption during technology transitions and implementations will be critical.
We are investing in advanced security protocols and conducting regular vulnerability assessments inside and outside DeKalb’s network to address these challenges. We also focus on developing a robust IT governance framework to guide technology integration and ensure alignment with our strategic goals. We are committed to implementing modern solutions that improve experiences for internal and external customers. Lastly, continuous professional development and staying abreast of industry best practices are critical components of our strategy.
